Paul Robeson Visits Moscow Ca. 1958Unknown - 1958
Paul Robeson was an internationally renowned folk singer, actor, linguist, and civil rights activist. Ardently involved in the study of other cultures, Robeson spoke more than 20 languages, including Chinese, Gaelic, and Russian. Interested in left-wing politics, Robeson traveled several times to the Soviet Union, but his suspected communist sympathies prompted the U.S. State Department to revoke his passport in 1950. Robeson's passport was reinstated in 1958, and he left the United States to move to London, returning to the United States in 1963 due to failing health.
