In 1947 Jackie Robinson became the first African-American baseball player to enter the Major Leagues. Although Robinson's team, the Brooklyn Dodgers, lost to the New York Yankees in the 1947 World Series, Robinson's determination and skill - he hit 12 home runs during his rookie season - quickly made him a national hero.
