In 1950, Ralph Bunche became the first African-American man to win the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of his efforts to negotiate an end to the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. He became instrumental in formulating United Nations (UN) policies regarding peacekeeping operations and worked to bring stability to war-torn regions.
