A member of the New York Yankees, Joe DiMaggio was one of the greatest and most beloved baseball players of the 1930s and 1940s. During World War II, sports such as baseball kept American morale high. Ironically, many teams were weakened when players (including DiMaggio himself) enlisted in the armed forces. DiMaggio was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1955, just four years after his retirement from baseball.
