Republicans gained three seats in the Senate adn 47 seats in the House in the 1966 elections. These gains demonstrated a decline in Democrat President Lyndon B. Johnson's popularity. Among the most prominent Republican victories was that of Ronald Reagan, a former actor who was elected as the governor of California. Though this was his first public office, Reagan was soon mentioned as a possible presidential candidate.
