The cold war between the United States and the Soviet Union resulted in the "space race" an intense rivalry to become the first nation to send men to the Moon. While the United States ultimately achieved the first lunar landing, the Soviet Union dominated space flight in the early 1960s. After two Soviet cosmonauts had orbited the earth, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) selected John Glenn to become the first American to orbit the earth. He lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 20, 1962. Upon returning from his successful mission, Glenn was welcomed as a national hero.
