A good description of rural Irish life in the 40's and 50's. It is a depressing read as the father is so rigidly set in his ways that he alienates those that are closest to him. Corporal punishment was the accepted way of maintaining dominance over a younger generation that had the luxury of education which opened up a world of possibilities.
