Using his best known works Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass as well as his Sylvia and Bruno books, Ackerman explores Carroll's philosophy in the light of Dodgson's writing and his known interests. After the scientific austerity of the Enlightenment, the late nineteenth century saw a return to Gnostic themes through the practice of Theosophy. Ackerman sees Wonderland as a symbolic representation of this more mystical Neo-platonic revival. The jumbling of time and mutability of the creatures Alice encounters fit well into this philosophy. Ackerman notes that other have viewed Carroll through the lens of mathematics or Victorian politics. There is no reason why more that one aspect of Dodgson's life should not find their way into his work. However, Ackerman's argument that the fiction is primarily a philosophical/religious search is a compelling one. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
