Reading and discussing this book with others, about 48 hours after the 2016 elections, was timely, challenging and worthwhile.

Really good because if you really wan't to read about the 1920's and how people were treated differently and how this (mean) group called the Ku Klux Klan even went to kill African Americans, Jews, and people who were not Prodistans (African Americans or Jews or whites).

This is a tremendous, powerful read that manages to share a troubling side of history through courageously crafted verses. I love that the heroines are young women ages 12 and 6. Hesse has an uncanny way of making sorrowful stories entertaining and enlightening simultaneously.

I had to read this book for a school project, so I read it a few times. Each time I read it I had a new understanding of the book. This book has such depth, and each time you read it you will discover something new about the plot, characters, conflict, and setting even. This book will never get old.

Told in several voices, this book relates the arrival of the K.K.K. in a small Vermont town in the 1920''s. As several of the townsfolk are singled out for persecution, others are struggling with resistance. All the entries are written as poetry which might deter some readers, and there are better depictions of this same issue in fiction, like To Kill A Mockingbird, but the author has given us a genuine portrait of the time period.
