In this sequel to A duty to the Dead, once again WW1 nurse Bess Crawford stumbles into a murky family drama that is left behind after the death of one of her wounded warriors. Her involvement is triggered by an unlikely coincidence and as a (hopefully) impartial witness, she is off in pursuit of a killer. A well written (even though formulaic) mystery unfolds, beginning with tragic loss and unanswered questions and gathering momentum as we get closer to the conclusion. It has been sufficiently entertaining to hold my interest but I think this will be the last of the series I'll be reading; I feel that Bess as protagonist has not, over the course of two full length installments been developed into a sufficiently compelling personality for me to want to read the rest of the series. Regrettably, she's too squeaky-clean, wholesome and well balanced to remain interesting.
