In this story, the little boy isn't listening when parts are given out for the Christmas play so he wanders around during practice. He worries that he is "nothing" in the show. He finds out he is a shepherd. During the show the boy picks his nose, sings the wrong part, dances incorrectly and forgets to leave the stage. But in the end, Granny says he was the best part of the play. The illustrations are colorful and fun although a bit overcrowded on some pages. Although I am a huge fan of cheering on the underdog, I did not like the negative mood portrayed, such as when the boy thinks he is "nothing." And how could he be the only child making mistakes in what I assume is a preschool or kindergarten play? This boy is singled out as the mess up. This book had potential, but didn't deliver the fun and cute factors.
