I am taking the time to write a comment to this based on the other being so bad! I picked up this book at a sale somewhere which is why I own it. I enjoyed it the first time and in fact would likely place it among the top 25-50 books I have ever read. And unlike the other commenter - I haven't enjoyed the other Louis Bayard books I have read that much - although they are readable--to me not "must reads". Mr. Timothy however I have actually read twice since the first time and the re-reads are always over the Christmas season. This is why I looked the book up - I'm looking for Christmas connections books to borrow over the holidays and hoped there would be a good subject keyword. I guess no one really connects this with a Christmas read and it is only because of the lead character. Dark? yes but then so is the Chrismas Carol - and I read that original every few years as well. If I were organized, I'd syncronize my readings of these two. In anycase, this is a thrilling read. If you like your mysteries with a little thrill and based in a past reality, you will really enjoy this book.
